HEY KID Hey Kid, it’s not your fault I did still miss you I did still call What’s do you say when Your brother goes? He don’t remember Still I see you Hey kid, what do you say? Your mother’s in shambles Your dad ain’t great With wings like vipers And hair like snow Hey kid
2.
WHAT I NEED If I bleed On the way back to our house Back to our house Bind my legs You always do What I see The pale of your eyes A kiss so deep One pale swan that sings below A broken wing If we sleep let’s be at peace The arms of gods Beneath your neck I could sing You should smile But it won’t sing Wild as a dove when you came Walked in the world till I found you No better diamond I’ve seen No brighter leaf on a tree What I need Your bones across my chest
3.
HOLD OUT YOUR HANDS (NOW LAY DOWN) In the valley of death There is hope for the heart I guess With a kiss on the cheek A hand on the back Of the neck One raven that rides One diamond That stays in your side One crucible crossed One river to meet Once more Wouldn’t you sing So loud if they said you were good And you were good Would you speak A giants tongue If I saw you there Beneath the oaks Cos there was Water in your eyes Before you sang And you were good You were good You were good
4.
HOW THEN SHALL WE BE SAVED? Swing low over me Break branches and be my feet Call me upward With a song to sing Oh my lord Be my wings When I can’t walk Hold my hands As in a child Cos I was blind as a fool I used things I messed you up Carry me on them wings Oh my lord Break my heart with your songs My sweet dove It is you that I see Oh my lord Oh, ride on my shoulders I saw you stand I saw you fall One leg beneath One arm on top Kissing moonlight Beneath the shade Of your mothers branches

Hey Kid (PR) 03:35
HEY KID I see you play in by your self, bouncin’ that ball on and on I read your mind your trophies shelf Shines with all the gold you won The backyard stinks won’t pollute your sweet dreams Your classmates scorns won’t weight in your neat wings Down by the river there you smile Far from daddy’s downtown booze There you can fly for miles and miles Over the gym the church the school Your eyes can see those worlds you only know But down here they keep sayin’ be quick grow Hey Kid, how I wish I could save you from time as I wish time could be a good mate How I wish you could shape your own life free from any fear or hate, you know hey kid I know my boy it’s hard to grow They want you strong you feel you’re wrong But it’s even harder to be a girl Keep it in your mind all life long But now my robin spread your wings and soar Shield ‘em well and the sky will always be yours Hey kid, how I wish I could save you from time as I wish time could be a good mate How I wish you could shape your own life free from any fear or hate Hey kid, how I wish you had always a friend ready to whisper it’s ok How I wish Love could lead your steps in every possible way, you know hey kid

WHAT I NEED What I need is not shiny car, what I need is not a Gucci coat What I need is not some briar root on my boat What I need is not a huge tv to let my wills becoming deportees What I need is a smile when I’m feeling blue, what I need is a friend like You What I need is not a diamond ring, what I need is not a golden chain, what I need is not some caviar stock on my plane What I need is not a platinum cross to show my supposed faith off What I need is a tip when I feel like a fool, what I need is a friend like you What I need is a ride in your car What I need is your light when I’m dark What I need is a word from your heart It’s your voice when I feel alone, it’s your presence even when you’re gone It’s You What I need is a ride in your car What I need is your light when i’m dark What I need is a word from your heart It’s your voice when I feel alone, it’s your presence even when you’re gone, it’s a cheer before I get home, it’s You

HOW THEN SHALL WE BE SAVED? Mother tell me please I didn’t get how it works a nation of immigrants repelling their own folks Father tell me please I didn’t get how it goes a God filled nation praying for more pain and wired walls Mother tell me please why does greed wear our crown Filthy liars in charge and upright men down Father tell me please how could peace spring from guns When did this rape start, when has this hate begun How then shall we be saved

about

MATTHEW PAUL BUTLER: I wrote these songs for my friend Matt Gullitti who moved on to the next life last year. He constantly encouraged me to write better and to be better. He was one of my biggest supporters and one of my worst critics. I can never thank him enough for that. These four songs were recorded on the 1965 Gibson that he gave me a month before he left and hopefully embody some of who he was to me and many others. Travel well my friend.

PHILL REYNOLDS: To my friends, to my family, to everyone who’s fighting against any cynicism. Freedom comes from within.
